TL;DR Instead of dumping all my money into FAANG stocks of companies that hate me and my values, I’m investing in my family, community, business, and on rare occasions, stocks, bonds, CDs that align with my goals. I’m also paying down debt.
You are the Product
Stocks and crypto are ponzi schemes most of the time. All the wealth is concentrated to a small percentage of people and it’s obvious. When you invest in a public company, you are giving money to someone for doing nothing.
Obviously, this is an oversimplification but we know that the stock market isn’t as “fair” as wall-street goons are leading us to believe. I think the word people use is “rigged” similar to elections in the US.
We are funding our own downfall. Terrible tech companies that control information and spew targeted, high-quality, propaganda. Even AI seems to be nothing more than a gatekeeper for information and will soon be the All-Seeing Eye replacing Google search.
So instead of throwing all my money away to these companies, I am making alternative investments.
Investing in Gardening, Hunting, Health, and Community
Some people suppose I am some sort of hippie but I don’t drop acid, I don’t smell like an arm-pit, and I have a job. But I do invest in my garden:)
Changing the way I invest has led to the last 3 years being the hardest of my life. Mentally, physically, and emotionally. Here are a few examples that I know many people also went through:
Bought a house, rehabbed it in 6 months, and got married in the back-yard
Started a 100% Organic Raised bed garden to grow my own fruits and vegetables to avoid GMOs, Pesticides, and herbicides.
Fought for my family’s rights in the hospital when my wife gave birth to our first child (I made a couple of nurses cry).
Learned to hunt to get an abundant source of protein
Learned about bulk, healthy grocery suppliers (Azure Standard)
Met local farmers who sell raw milk and eggs
Would you consider these investments? I certainly would. The payout is something tangible, unlike my ROTH IRA that just farts around on a graph…
How are these Things Investments?
If you Google the meaning of investment, you get the most worthless definition.
The meaning everyone knows is “Money goes in and more money comes out” aka you get a return. But if the return is just more dollars that are easily eroded by the Fed printing more money every time the flu is rebranded, I’d like something else in return.
My return on these investments looks like this:
Skills to grow, harvest, and maintain food sources AND teach my kids
High-quality, nutrient-dense food
Close ties with businesses that produce goods/ services I want and need
Reliable relationships
At the end of the day, I don’t really want to rely on stocks of tech companies that don’t make anything of value, much less a profit, to help me retire.
