Hippie Lives in a 180 ft tall Redwood for ~2 years So Loggers Don’t Chop it Down

Whether you love or hate trees, this story is pretty neat.

In 1997, 23 year old Julia “Butterfly” Hill climbed atop a 1,000+ year-old redwood tree in protest to protect the old-growth forest that was being logged at the time in Humbolt County, California. The Specific tree was called “Luna” and was over 180 feet tall.

What she thought would be a week or two of “tree-sitting” turned into TWO F*CKIN’ YEARS.

The logging company eventually backed off, the “tree sitters” made their point, and that tree along with many others like it, are still protected today. If nothing else, the takeaway is:

1. One person can (and will) make a difference

2. Grit is important when getting things done

3. Community is Important - she couldn’t have done it without her supporters

Big Box Stores Now Sell Pretty Solid Greenhouses

A few years ago I decided to build a greenhouse in my backyard and the painstaking process left me unhinged. But for the size I wanted, it was cheaper to buy the lumber locally, frame it up, and put polycarbonate panels on it.

Now, Big Box stores such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, and even Harbor Freight have an awesome selection of greenhouse kits that anyone can buy. Where were these two years ago?

Benefits of Greenhouse in the backyard:

• Lengthens the growing season (Early spring germination and into Fall/ Winter)

• Doubles as a Sauna if you shut the vents

• Everyone thinks you are really cool
