Some things to Consider When Buying a Homestead Property

My thoughts and experience on finding a place you love to live long term

Land + neighbors + Resources + Skill = Where to live long-term

I Love Where I Live❤️

I’ve lived in rentals and also in my own home, and I gotta say:

Owning is way better IF you have the following:

1. Land

2. Great Neighbors

3. Resources

4. Skills

LAND

Having room for play areas, gardens, and hunting is the best. I wake-up everyday thanking God that I live where I live. It is a blessing.

Having room to grow and do your own stuff in your yard is freedom at it’s highest form.

• Wanna have a gigantic bonfire? No one can say “you can’t do that”.

• Wanna have a huge loud party? Go for it.

• Wanna have a couple kids? Room to grow and play and teach!

• Wanna start a firewood business? Their your trees do whatever you want.

The possibilities are endless! But it does come with hard-work and responsibilities and maintaining Land and easy, cheap, or quick! Although many find it therapeutic.

Neighbors

If you buy near the right neighbors then yes, Homer, You can drink alone on Wednesday Morning! But I would love Flanders as a neighbor, honestly…dude is based!

Having neighbors with common interests and life experience (less diversity honestly) is underrated. I live in a neighborhood with a bunch of outdoor-loving, freedom-fighting, fitness-freak fathers…I couldn’t be more grateful to find my people right next door.

Literally, go up to the door and say “I’m looking at buy that property, wanting to meet a few neighbors and get your opinion on the area, if you have a sec?”

Do that before even talking to realtors or sellers.

Resources

Even the best off-grid homesteaders in the world rely on outside resources if they want a FEW creature comforts. When I say resources, I mean anything you would buy instead of making yourself.

It might even be a service or groceries. Considering your proximity and access to these products and services is important. For example, I still buy groceries, but I grow 90% of all my fruits and vegetables. I drive to the grocery store and I probably always will. I don’t see cutting groceries out ever, really.

In this case, being close to resources is something to consider. BUT I have found bulk grocery delivery services like Azure Standard meant for homestead-y type communities interested in healthy alternatives!

Skills

Consider these queries….

What skills do you have?

• Example: Have you ever maintained land and ALSO maintained small engines?

Are you willing to Learn?

What Skills do your neighbors have?

• You can trade your skills for their skills. Example: I ask my mechanic neighbor to take a look at my car when I have a problem - He uses my super strength when he needs help lifting and installing a fireplace or new windows! Win Win, no money exchanges hands!

Conclusion

When looking for a house, always have a long-term mindset and a vision of what you will make the property into and WHO you are growing with.
