Bennett Springs was a blast and I recommend it for anyone who is looking to get into trout fishing because you are almost guaranteed to catch a fish.
The whole setup is designed to help you catch healthy trout. From the hatchery to bait shop, and the campground it’s a great time.
You can buy everything you need on-site with no prior knowledge and by the end of it, come away with beautiful rainbow trout.
Is this good for beginners?
Yes, it’s perfect.
Where is it?
West of Lebanon Missouri, off of the Niangua River (Bennett Springs is a branch/ tributary of that river.)
What type of fish can you catch?
We saw mostly RAINBOW trout, some brown trout, and your classic bluegill, gar, and sunfish.
Is this cheating?
It does feel like cheating a bit because the fish hatchery is RIGHT in the park, but, they are maintaining an ecosystem by breeding these beautiful fish and letting people enjoy the park with tag limits.
Are there any natural trout?
Yes. Trout can be found naturally in Missouri, although not at these levels. You will find larger fish near the hatchery which could mean they came up to the hatchery to try and breed. But I’d think you may be hard-pressed to find a natural trout right there near the hatchery. Maybe SOME second-generation fish that was bread at the hatchery.
Can I take my family?
Yes. Bennett Springs is super family-friendly. TONS of accommodations and rentals that are really nice to stay in. Also tons of space for camping or bringing your RV. They also have playgrounds and paths so you can tire out the little ones and actually get some fishing in.
